Offering Nantucket’s Only 100% Organic Land Care Program

WHY ORGANIC LAND CARE?

We at Atlantic Landscaping Inc. feel that Nantucket is a very special place, with a unique environment and eco-system.  Over the years there has been more and more publicity about the effects of chemical fertilizers and their effects on lawns and plants, as well as their effect on the drinking water and surrounding eco-system (for example. Eel grass).  We feel that introducing a completely organic way of fertilizing lawns and plants will allow the property owners on Nantucket the ability to have both a beautiful and healthy property, while at the same time helping to maintain a healthy eco-system and cleaner drinking water.  In order to stay healthy, we are told to be careful what food and nutrients we put in our body, well the same applies to the landscape of your property.  To maintain a healthy and self sustaining landscape, we have to be very careful what chemicals and microbes we put into our soil.   Your soil is alive, just like you are.

To get this completely Organic Land Care program started, Atlantic Landscaping Inc. has hired a Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) accredited consultant; Patrick Mulcahy.  Patrick is the former owner of The Mowing Co. and Organic Lawn on Nantucket, and currently owns and operates a thriving complete organic land care business on Cape Cod called, the Organic Lawn Co.  Patrick will be available by phone or appointment to answer any question or concerns that you might have about this program.

COMPOST TEA

Compost tea, popular in Europe for years, has recently been making itself known in this country.  It is gaining popularity as one of the most effective organic products available.  It is a very special product that is highly beneficial both to soil and to the leaf area of the plant.  The billions of microbes in the tea offer ideal food to the soil and protect the leaf of the plant from pests and disease.  We at Atlantic Landscaping Inc. are pleased to offer our very own “brew”.  Each batch is made in our state of the art brewing machine and then sprayed on your lawn, trees, or garden.

WHY IT WORKS  

Soil is alive.  Healthy soil contains billions of organisms, from earthworms to microscopic bacteria.  Organic treatments allow these organisms to live and multiply.  In turn healthy soil encourages deep root growth that will enable your lawns and gardens to better withstand drought, pests, and disease.  Healthy soil promotes naturally beautiful landscapes.

The Organic Land Care program will consist of applications of organic granular fertilizers, as well as applications of liquid compost tea.  The number of applications of both will be based on the condition and health of your soil.  Lawns that have never used chemical fertilizers will respond to this program a lot quicker than those that have.  It usually takes 3-5 years of organic land care for a lawn that has used heavy chemical fertilizers to be self sustaining.  Once a lawn has become self sustaining the number of applications of granular fertilizers can be decreased, as well as the applications of compost tea. 

Over time, organic land care will save you money.  You will have to water your lawn less, fertilize less, and eliminate the need for pest and disease control.  Not to mention, your property will appear healthier than ever.

Attached to this pamphlet you will find a sample Soil Submission Form which is what we will submit to have your soil tested.  There are three ways we can test the soil.  We can do a Total Food Web test (recommended), Bacteria and Fungi test, or a Qualitative Package.  We do not mark up the price on these tests.  You will pay what we pay to have the soil test done, plus postage.  We recommend the Total Food Web test as it will give us the best assessment of your
soil, and what attention it needs.  The Soil Foodweb organization will not only give us the results of this test, but will also tell us what needs to be done to get your soil healthy again.  We will make copies of the results we receive from the Soil Foodweb, and send them to you for your records. 

****It should be noted that Atlantic Landscaping Inc’s regular six step program is not a completely chemical approach.  The first step in this program is an application of a pre-emergent fertilizer, and the sixth step is a winterizer both of which do contain chemicals.  The other steps in the program are organic granular fertilizers.  We will continue to offer this service for those that are not interested in the Organic Land Care program.
