Hardscaping: The Structural Process
As a subset of Construction (B), this process focuses specifically on installing durable, high-quality stone, masonry, and wood features.
01
Design Hand-Off & Layout:
-
The hardscape design is transferred from paper to the site, with all boundaries and elevations clearly marked using batter boards and string lines.
02
Foundation and Base Preparation:
-
Excavation to the proper depth for the planned feature (patio, walkway, wall).
-
Installation and compaction of the structural base layer (crushed stone/gravel) to ensure stability—essential for preventing paving stones from settling unevenly in the island’s sand.
03
Feature Construction (The Build):
-
Paving: Laying pavers, natural stone (like bluestone), or brick for patios and walkways, using industry best practices for joints and leveling.
-
Walls: Construction of retaining walls, seating walls, or outdoor masonry elements with proper footings and drainage behind the structure.
04
Detailing and Finishing:
-
Installation of edging or curbs to lock the hardscape materials in place.
-
Joints are filled with sand or polymeric sand to inhibit weed growth and stabilize the surface.

05
Cleanup & Integration:
-
The new hardscape is cleaned and prepared for the final softscape integration, where planting beds and lawns are installed right up to the new stone edges.
